The Tattooed Person’s Survival Guide to Thanksgiving

Your Survival Guide to Thanksgiving

parents hate tattoos

Family Goals

It’s that time of year again. Time for you to pack your bags, load up the car (or hop on a plane, train, or bus) and head on out to mom’s/grandma’s/Aunt Brenda’s/etc. house for Thanksgiving Dinner. Now, you love your family… or at least you tolerate them – no one is saying otherwise. But unless your name is Wednesday Adams (in which case…call me so we can be best friends), you – as a heavily tattooed person – probably dread these large family get-togethers a bit, especially if you have parents against tattoos. My own mother HATES my tattoos  but still somehow we manage.  She’s my mom for goodness sake!  Time to take the high road and put together a solid Thanksgiving Day game plan.

parents hates tattoos

First off, you have to look your mom (or mom-equivalent) in the eye and answer her inevitable question: “You didn’t get any more of those awful tattoos, did you?” The appropriate response? “Yes mom, as a matter of fact, I did get some more of those awfully cool tattoos, thanks for asking!” Hopefully, your mom has a sense of humor and will appreciate your clever word play. If not, then brace yourself for a long holiday meal potentially filled with; judgement, eyeball rolling, heavy sighing, and pointed questions like, “Are you a drug addict?”  But don’t lose hope and reach for that long sleeve turtleneck quite yet! Try some of these clever tactics to help you navigate Thanksgiving like a ninja – a tattooed ninja.

1. Hang out with the oldies.

Now you might think your Great Uncle Joe or Great Grandma Mae will hate on your tattoos – and you are probably right.  But you know what they will probably really like? A long conversation with you. Be awesome and ask them all about their health and what they eat for breakfast. Ask Great Uncle Joe if he served in a war and if so, does he have a service tattoo. (Servicemen and servicewoman are especially proud of service related tattoos – as they should be.  The long history of military tattoos is a glorious one and should be respected.) Build. A. Bridge. Once you have softened them up a bit, break the ice by saying, “I bet you are wondering why I got all these tattoos – people ‘like me’ didn’t do that in your day, did they?” Then blow their minds by telling them about the historical background of tattoos in this country and the various American presidents and European royalty that have sported ink

Then when you sit down to dinner, if anyone gives you shit about your tattoos, your new bestie oldie will most likely defend you – which will shut everyone else right up. Respect your elders y’all.

2. Out your relatives.

If you are dining in a group of more than 15 people, chances are at least two of them have a tattoo. Sure it might be a little heart or infinity symbol, but I bet you dollars for doughnuts someone at your dinner table has a little bit of ink that no one knows about. Work the crowd and find them. Then if anyone starts in on you and your new neck tattoo, segway to cousin Michelle and her dreamcatcher tattoo on her lower back. Don’t make fun because two wrongs don’t make a right. Ask your relative if it hurt, what it means, and will they get another one. People with tattoos LOVE talking about their tattoos – even if they only have one little one. For them, it is like their secret bad-ass sign. Welcome them to the tattoo tribe and make them feel great about it; they will be way less likely to judge you.

3. Do all the dishes.

If your relatives are unforgiving in the tattoo department and unwilling to open their minds, then your best bet might be “world’s best helper” default setting. Set the table. Clear the table. Do the dishes. All of them. You will be a moving target and it is pretty hard to shit on someone who is doing a bunch of helping out. Keep a coffee mug filled with booze handy and you might even enjoy yourself. Plus the “Sisterhood of Dish Washing” is a chatty, friendly place and you might manage to win over a few relatives while you are drying and stacking.

4. Baffle  Them With Needlepoint

parents hate tattoos

Related to a bunch of teetotalers or don’t drink yourself? Flip the script and bring an embroidery project to sit on the couch with. Seriously. If you are a dude, this tip is especially for you. Get someone you know to start a simple needlepoint project for you and show you the basics. Bring your cross-stitch sampler to dinner and sit quietly on the couch struggling with your french knots. The juxtaposition alone will fry your families circuitry and you can bet great grandma will overlook your tattooed knuckles and neck so she can sit next to you and show how a real woman needle points.

Thanksgiving is for family and you only get one. Make the best of them by being your best self.

(and keep a flask in your pocket just in case…)

Tattoo Legends and Major Talent – Bay Area Tattoo Convention Does it Again

If you were lucky you spent last weekend at the Bay Area Tattoo Convention marveling at the unbelievable amount of tattoo talent contained in a single room. If you were really lucky you are still healing and recovering from getting tattooed by some of the most talented tattoo artists in the country/world. And if you are like me, you went home feeling like you got to participate in a well run, perfectly planned, and thoroughly excellent tattoo convention and now it’s time to flip through your phone and look at all the pictures you took and count up your fancy business cards and stickers (I got 17).

The conference featured a tremendous amount of serious artists hard at work on equally serious collectors, (be sure to check out Horitomo State of Grace and BATC Instagrams for tons of great pics). I checked in on Friday night just after the doors had opened and it was already filled with collectors, fans and artists – many of whom were already hard at work. The floor was well organized and intimate enough that you could cruise around and take a close look at all the excellent flash, portfolios, books and other tattoo related goodies. The vibe was friendly, welcoming, and professional. There were so many prominent artists in the hall it was hard not to stare and be a general pest (I was maybe 74% successful) and the overall sense of community was evident. Sure I could drone on (and on) about what a great convention the BATC is, how friendly and helpful Taki is, and how much I enjoyed myself – but I have to go organize my sticker collection, so instead here a few snapshots. See you next year BATC – well done!

Suicide Prevention Flash Event at Aces Over Eights, Petaluma CA

Aces Over Eights – Suicide Prevention and Awareness Flash Event

suicide prevention

This past Sunday there was a lot going on in Petaluma CA. There was a sizable antique fair in the quaint downtown, lots of tourists wandering about, a couple of baseball games on TV (being closely watched by fans at the charming Bleacher Critic -retail store complete with bleacher seats and large screen TV), pithy political signs in the window of the Sonoma Coast Surf and Skate, lots of cute dogs on leashes and people watching. But the real action was over at Aces Over Eights – an old school tattoo shop owned by Jimmy Bruce and Cody Holyoak and tucked right in the heart of downtown Petaluma.

A number of years ago Jimmy decided to help out a friend that was hit by some unexpected vet bills. He created a raffle with tattoos as the prize and although sadly the dog in need had died he was able to donate that money to local animal shelters. The giving back didn’t stop there, however. Jimmy continued to hold events to raise money for different animal charities for the next 4 years but last year he branched out. After the devastating fires that ravaged Sonoma county, last October Jimmy and his crew decided to up the ante and hold a walk up flash event and donate all the proceeds to help victims of the Sonoma fires. They tattooed non stop from noon to almost ten at night, tattooing close to 100 people and raised a serious chunk of money to boot.

This year Jimmy and Nick Rodin – a resident artist at the shop- turned their altruistic attention to a cause that is sadly close to home for them both. Suicide has touched both Jimmy and Nicks lives in a very personal way and together they decided to make this years event about supporting suicide awareness and prevention. With a solid track record of organizing charity events, Jimmy and Nick were able to gather a group of talented artists to assist the members of their own team with the goal of tattooing crisp, beautiful tattoos on as many people as they could in a day. They ended up with 11 artists total (hey they should form a baseball team!) and altogether they tattooed 47 people and raised a staggering $11,300 with tattoos and donations combined. Participating artists had two great sheets of flash to work with or folks could even bring their own flash to get tattooed.

I was proud (and lucky) to snag a spot and got my very first piece of flash (instead of large-scale ) by Daat, owner of Santa Rosa Tattoo.

I was particularly impressed by how well organized this event was. It was obvious it wasn’t their first rodeo but holy hell – they started ON TIME! They had waivers, people contacting attendees by cell phone and getting them in the shop so that everything could roll smoothly, they were so well organized. Background support kept stations clean and stocked, Amy’s Kitchen set up a portable lunch station. The shop atmosphere was one of calm, focused professionalism. I was truly impressed. And a sharp, expertly applied tattoo in under an hour for a worthy cause? Are you kidding me?!

Aces Over Eights, Jimmy, Nick, and the entire team show us what a civic-minded, well-run shop staffed with dedicated artists that care about their community can do. My hats off to Aces Over Eights and the entire roster of artists (and extremely important support staff!) that made this meaningful event a possibility and a roaring success. Be sure to check out the participating artists Instagram and give these generous souls your business if possible. Contact Aces Over Eights if you would like to donate to their Suicide Prevention and Awareness event – they know all the right people to send your much-appreciated donation to. And by all means, if you find yourself in Petaluma check out this tiny shop with a big heart of gold.

Bay Area Tattoo Convention October 19-21

On any given weekend in most cities of a decent size, you can probably find a tattoo convention to attend if you are so inclined. What used to be a rare and rather specific event geared towards working tattoo artists and the people who wanted to get tattooed by them has shifted to an ever-growing list of elaborate lifestyle event shows with tons of bells and whistles. Hot rods, live music, pin-up girls and burlesque. Dozens of merchandise vendors of all stripes, even food trucks and beer on tap. There is even a little tattooing thrown in.

Now don’t get me wrong – events of this stripe – especially if they are well-organized and well run and give good artists a chance to showcase their work – can be a lot of fun to attend. But sometimes it feels like the actual tattooing – the sting of the alcohol wipes, the buzz of the machines (or not – you coil fans) can seem a little thin on the ground. As the world of tattooing has expanded to include thousands of new artists pushing the boundaries of what is possible with this ancient craft and tattoos themselves have cropped up on almost everyone – (looking at you, grandma) sometimes it is important to wind back around to the core principles of quality artists, quality work, and serious collectors. There is a convention for that. It is The Bay Area Tattoo Convention.

bay area tattoo convention
I’m relatively new to the world of tattoos and am in no way an expert or a voice of influence. I am just a burgeoning hardcore collector with a rabid interest in tattoo artists, history, and culture. I like to watch ladies with feather fans as much as anyone but what really gets me going is a convention floor stacked with some of the most well-respected and talented tattoo artists in the world working at their craft. The Bay Area Tattoo Convention is in its 14th year and is the type of show that attracts serious tattoo collectors and tattoo fans and offers a rare opportunity to see some rather elusive artists (books closed, hide in their shops working 24/7 and never come out kind of elusive) in action.

bay area tattoo convention

Founded by Taki KitamuraState of Grace Tattoo in San Jose and Roman Enriquez- Strong Tattoo and 45s Forever Bike Shop – The BATC has set itself apart from the scrum by focusing exclusively on hand-selected artists that are there to tattoo and the collectors that want to get tattooed by them. 96 artists, maybe 10 vendors – all tattoo industry related. No live shows or distractions. I had the pleasure of chatting with Taki and he said something that I just have to quote, “The beautiful women in our shows aren’t swinging from poles – they are holding their own on the floor next to the male tattooers.” Both Taki and I agreed that women can do whatever the hell they like including swinging from poles, wearing skimpy outfits, riding live bobcats (my words, not his) – whatever. The point being made is that talent, skill, professionalism, and artistry is the focus of the show and a woman artist need not be anything other than a talented artist to be featured – nipple tassels are optional. (Please direct all angry comments directly to me and leave Taki alone, thanks). Taki and Roman take great care to make sure that every aspect of the BATC is tattoo related and set up to help artists and collectors connect. Check out their sponsors – all Tattoo folks (and a special thanks to TTTism for being a major sponsor this year – putting your money where your mouth is and helping small yet mighty events like BATC happen).

There are quite a few extremely talented female artists that are part of the rich cross-section of humanity and tattoo styles that make up this years convention. Artists from all over the country and the globe (check out the BATC Instagram and watch their stories to get some sneak peeks on who will be there – insider tip; they might not be listed on the artists attending page – you’re welcome) will be in attendance with the one thing binding them together – apart from the ring of power (sorry – nerd aside) is a passion for their craft and a reputation for excellence. So do you already need to have a spot secured to get tattooed at the convention this year? Hell no. Many of the artists pre-book but Taki assures me at least half of the artists are prepped for walk-ups. He also mentioned a cool trend he has been observing where very well-known and usually booked-for-life artists will attend a convention like BATC and ONLY do walk-ups based on flash they have ready to go. Talk about a convention exclusive!

Speaking of which – some convention exclusives include book releases, special merch by artists and vendors, and fantastic lectures.
The convention is at the SFO Hyatt Regency and it is easy to get to and comfortable to hang out in. Show up early enough and you might spot some of your favorite artists grabbing coffee in the lobby. Hang out late enough and maybe you will be lucky enough to watch those same artists chat and relax over a drink. Be a really low-key not weird collector (present company excluded) and maybe they will invite you to sit a spell. The tattoo world is a big, eclectic, multi-faceted community that ideally makes room for all types of artists, collectors, styles and people. The thing that really binds together the best of the tattoo community is a sense of pride in the craft, a spirit of openmindedness in regards to other artists and styles, a willingness to learn and improve, and an absolute dedication to artistic excellence. And that is why I’m spending the third weekend of October at The Bay Area Tattoo Convention. See you there.

Tattoo Removal Options – Fact Vs. Fiction

Everything You Need to Know About Tattoo Removal Options

DISCLAIMER

This blog is notorious for the following:

  • non-expert opinions (we should have chocolate money!)
  • random observations (what is in that tree over there?)
  • double negatives (don’t not complain about those – please!)
  • non-sequiturs (squirrel!)
  • and on and on

What does this mean for you the reader? Take what I have to say with a grain of salt. Or perhaps an M & M. Because that would be nice. (See “non-sequiturs”). Now I do my research, I ask professionals who know more than I do, and I try to provide useful information, however, this is not a place for solid, irrefutable facts. That is what Wikipedia is for. (Ooo – add “sarcasm” to that bullet list).

So now that you have been properly warned let’s talk about having a tattoo removed. Well, you went and done it. You got some shitty ink by a scratcher or you put the wrong name under “I Will Always Love…” or maybe your ink is making it hard for you to blend in or get jobs. Or maybe you would like to replace an old tattoo with a brilliant new one and just need to lighten the old one – not have it removed entirely. There are endless reasons why people seek to have a tattoo removed.

tattoo removal

Laser removal by www.thefinery.net

tattoo removal

Laser removal by www.thefinery.net

The most common and viable means for this is laser removal.  Last week I beat you up with all those poorly healing tattoo pics and I will not do that again. All puppies and rainbows here. However, if you are curious google “tattoo laser removal blister” and then brace yourself against the furniture because shit is about to get real.

Yes, laser removal works but done the old fashioned way with less sophisticated equipment and techniques it hurts like the Devil – if the Devil took a blowtorch to your skin and then finished it off with a loofah mitt. Dipped in sand. Here is WebMD’s take on laser removal and here is our old friend Wikipedia’s take on it – which is very thorough and points out that thankfully laser tattoo removal techniques have advanced and the procedure is now less painful and arduous with less chance of scarring than it was in the past. That is why you should seek out the best tattoo removal company in your area with the most up to date equipment. Your removal will be less painful, require fewer appointments, and will not result in eye-popping images of scary blisters on the internet.

The wiki article also included this little chestnut about prior means of tattoo removal,  Some early forms of tattoo removal included the injection or application of wine, lime, garlic or pigeon excrement.” Pigeon excrement? I’d love to learn how that “solution” came about. Hmmm – we have all this pigeon shit and it’s just ruining my dahlia’s – hey let’s inject it into your tattoo and see what happens!

But laser removal does work and it works well for most people and most tattoos. It is expensive and requires multiple appointments. It is also a medical procedure that carries risk so – just like a tattoo – go to a professional in a sterile environment – not some fly by night operation in the local strip mall. Tattoo removal like tattooing itself has experienced a leap forward in tools, techniques, and results. A top-notch laser removal company will provide better, faster, safer removal so do your research and choose wisely. If you are on the East Coast (say hi to my cousins for me) and also check out The Finery  A top-notch laser removal company with multiple locations.

As millions of people have decided to get ink a healthy portion have opted for some removal of that ink which equals…money. Just like underqualified people jumping into tattooing this same phenomenon is happening with laser removal. They are shooting your body with lasers people! Be picky!

tattoo removal

(if your laser removal professional is dressed like this then…who are we kidding. That would be AWESOME!)

So if the laser thing makes you a bit squeamish or you have been told that your particular tattoo will be difficult to remove because of the pigments used (this happened to me) are there any other options? Welllll…yes. Dermabrasion (basically scrubbing the shit out of the top layer of your skin to remove the tattoo), surgical removal (exactly what it sounds like) and then there are tattoo creams.

Wait a minute you say – I can just rub some cream on my regrettable tattoo of the Cheetos Cheetah guy  (sorry in advance if you personally have that tattoo but…really?)  and it will disappear? No Satanic skin burns or knives or power sanding? Why the hell would you try anything else?! Well kids I am sorry to say it is because those creams don’t work…yet.

tattoo removal

Oh Snap! He is actually pretty cool looking!

The current creams on the market – and there are many – all promise to easily and painfully remove your tattoo but they don’t really work. Ironically this is the only time your faint, faded scratcher tattoo might be an advantage. The guy who did you didn’t put the ink in deep enough resulting in that faded “scratchy” look that you want gone. A cream may help remove this type of tattoo because the ink is closer to the surface of the skin – emphasize might.

Here is what the Mayo Clinic (pretty reputable if you ask me) say about current tattoo creams, “There’s no evidence that tattoo removal creams work. At best, tattoo removal cream might fade or lighten a tattoo. The tattoo will remain visible, however, and skin irritation and other reactions are possible.”

So CAN you get your tattoo removed safely? Yes. Will it be expensive and hurt? Yes. The smartest thing to do is Think Before You Ink. A couple of weeks ago I (hopefully) talked my teenage daughter’s friend out of getting a tattoo anytime soon and the wiki article about removal does state, “Of those polled, the patients who regretted their tattoos typically obtained their tattoos in their late teens or early twenties”.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. Some people get inked early and heavy and they are completely happy and that is very cool. Only you can decide if it is time to remove a tattoo. And if you do be smart and safe. Go to a real professional. It’s a crazy world out there.

NOTE

If you or someone you know has gang tattoos and would like them removed you can most likely get this done professionally for FREE. There is an application process that you must go through to be approved. You can find the website and the application here at https://ift.tt/2MgeKak

Gambling Tattoos – Get Your BINGO On

I recently went to Las Vegas with a few girlfriends to celebrate my birthday. We had high hopes of living out our own personal version of The Hangover but mostly ended up hanging out in our hotel room misbehaving in a fairly civilized way – not a tiger or stray baby in sight. Vegas has so much going on you can almost forget it is built on gambling – except for the 400,000 slot machines everywhere calling to me with their colored lights and clips of favorite shows like Seinfeld. What evil genius figured out that if you put snippets from movies and television shows on a slot machine people will keep loading money into that thing just so they can see the Soup Nazi say “No Soup for You!” while your money slowly ebbs away? Amazing. But as usual, I digress.

Vegas is great place to have fun and potentially do some dumb shit. One of my girlfriends advocated hard for matching dice tattoos on our asses and it was discussed over cocktails with some seriousness. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed (me saying – uh no – my ass belongs to Teresa Sharpe and she is a bit…terittorial) and we went onto saner pleasure (cough). But a gambling tattoo?  Kind of fun, right? And thanks to the folks at Bingo Paddy Power who have submitted the following article I now know that BINGO enthusiasts like to get BINGO tattoos. I only hope that when I am old – or older if I’m being honest – that I am a cool granny with fun stories for all of my tattoos – maybe holding court in the BINGO halls and showing my fellow octogenarians my dice tattoo on my butt and telling them about that one time I went to Vegas…

Grandma’s getting frisky!

If you are an avid bingo fan you will know that ‘grandma’s getting frisky’ relates to the number 60!

In fact, it appears that if you are a really big bingo fan you will have a related tattoo somewhere on your body.

It is estimated over 4 billion people worldwide have a tattoo of some sort. Amongst them are people with bingo balls, dabbers, cards and ball shufflers inked onto their bodies.

Modern day tattoos are most often a sign of self-expression and affiliation with something or someone. With the bingo tattoo we can see most are in remembrance of a loved one and a sign of a bygone era.

gambling tattoos

Source

The traditional bingo card, balls and shuffler can be seen here in their full glory. This appears to be a true fan of the game through and through. The 13, ‘unlucky for some’, and the 12, ‘one dozen’ may signify special dates or even a winning line!

More recently bingo is played online on sites like bingo.paddypower.com but it is still widely played in bingo halls and social clubs worldwide.

gambling tattoos

Source

Here is a more modern take on the bingo theme with inclusion of the Muppets character Fozzie Bear. One of the attractive things about this style of inking is the use of colour which you can literally go to town on.

gambling tattoos

Even in black and white the bingo tattoo can be just as special. The above signifies the passing of a loved one, with the added written words ‘until my number is called’.

Unlike many other gambling tattoos like dice, cards and roulette the bingo tattoo always appears to have happy connotations, even in remembrance.

gambling tattoos

Some tattoos merely use the bingo balls to represent something meaningful, such as the supposedly ‘lucky’ number seven.

There are plenty of other ways to express your love for bingo as well by including themes, cards and other hobbies.

Microblading – My Brow Game is Strong

microblading

Confession time – I am terrible at girly things. Makeup, hair styling, dress up, general fluffery. I occasionally promise myself I will “Act like a real grown-up lady” and do All the Things and I go out and purchase a menagerie of products and objects to make me feel Goddess-like and then I swiftly lose interest. I am not a tom-boy per se, just a lazy louche who prefers her Pj’s and novels to late nights and parties – cest la vie. But this year is my Year of Saying Yes to just about everything including doing all the girl things.

Sure I pluck my eyebrows. Looking like a  Wookie has its own charm but I strive to look somewhat pulled together. My brows have taken on a life of their own at the same time my eyesight has decided to take an extended holiday. The result? A patchwork approach to brow maintenance that has potentially frightening results. I bought one of those 10X mirrors so I could see what was really going on but the visage revealed to me was so shocking I had to steady myself on the furniture and pour myself a stiff drink – at 10 am. Fuck. That.

Then, my miraculous Witch friend and hairdresser said she got her eyebrows microbladed.  (I know I know – why do I call her “My Witch Friend”? Because she sends me this kind of stuff on Instagram. And she is amazing.)

microblading

Marianella convinced me that microblading was the way to go so I booked an appointment with the incredibly talented Ashley Cali at www.calibrowsllc.com and now my Brow Game is so strong I feel like I could cut diamonds with my brow points -seriously. This quiet, professional, sweet little lady took over 2 hours to correct my haphazard brows. Her skills and technique are so precise and perfect I was seriously amazed. And she has an incredibly light hand – I think I dozed off a couple of times while she was tattooing me. I am saying yes to all kinds of things this year –  obstacle courses, Tango lessons, Vampire Balls, Crossdressing Comic – Cons, and extravagant trips – all the things. And now thanks to the super talented Ashley Cali I have brows that are laser-like in their perfection. I am that Cake song

But enough about me – let’s hear from Ashley about why she loves her job and how to get the perfect brows. And seriously – if you live within a 100 miles of this charming artisan – go get your brow game on – you won’t be sorry!
Tattoo Tourist: How did you get into permanent cosmetics? What appealed to you about the industry?
Ashley: I have been involved in skincare working as an Aesthetician for close to 10 years until this last year I have worked for doctors with backgrounds in dermatology and plastic surgery
which are also constantly changing evolving industries focusing on improving one’s self-appearance, when I saw how natural micro blading looked, the people’s reactions toward the finished product,
and realizing this was something within my scope I knew I had to do it!
TT: What was your training like?
Ashley: I have put myself through a few different pieces of training, they consisted of classrooms and private apprenticeship programs. I am a lot more of a hands-on and a visual type of person so the idea of classroom lecturing wasn’t my style when learning this trade, I had to force myself to learn
and critique myself in the shadows of some very good teachers. I traveled to Salt Lake City, Miami, and Los Angeles for my training.
I also now will offer training through private apprenticeship and my students have all been very satisfied and are flourishing in their business and I am still in contact with all of them
talking regularly, bouncing ideas off of each other, helping each other with questions in this constantly growing industry.
TT: In traditional tattooing, the industry is constantly evolving with new inks, techniques, and equipment – is this also true for permanent cosmetics?
Ashley: This is very true, as well as new techniques and styles being introduced, I am constantly reviewing websites/blogs, checking out the newest products and seeing what works best for me.
In permanent makeup there is always new machines entering the market, I just recently bought a new machine that I love, much better than the one I started with.
TT:  What is the biggest misconception clients have about permanent cosmetics?
Ashley: I have to make it very clear during my consultations that the word “permanent” does not mean they don’t have to ever do it again, no matter what you will need to do a touch up at some time. That being said, some eyeliner can go up to
5 years and still look good while some people may require a touch up at 1 year because just there skin and ink break down is different. The same with microblading, just because it can last 3+ years
doesn’t mean it will look great after that length of time, some clients may need their touch-ups within 1 year after their initial procedure.
TT: Can you give us a simple explanation on what microblading is – and what it isn’t re-tattoo technique, longevity, results etc.
Ashley: Microblading is a form of permanent cosmetics, each individual “hair like stroke” is made with a hand tool giving the most natural hair like appearance. It is only implanted in the epidermis layer of the skin
making the results not last as long but allowing the client the versatility to change the design as styles evolve.
TT: What is your favorite part of your job?
Ashley: My favorite part of my job is making people happy when they look at themselves in the mirror when I am finished. Their reactions make me feel like I made their day. “Wow those are my eyebrows!” or “my eyeliner, lips look awesome,” and “this is going to make
my life so much easier!” its a really good feeling. With a busy work schedule, being a wife, and a mother of 2, It truly makes my day seeing the reactions of my beautiful clients!
TT: What is the one thing you would like potential clients considering permanent makeup to know before they embark?
Ashley: Do your research, choose your artist wisely, make sure they have plenty of before and after pictures, that you are in love with their work, that they have great reviews, that it is being done in a permitted location up to proper health codes, and that your artist is licensed/insured.
Make sure your artist is following all bloodborne pathogens laws. I would make sure clients understand and realize this is something you will now need to keep up annually, to keep it looking fresh you will need to come in for touch-ups.
Here are a few examples of her magic – Thanking Ashley for making me feel like a queen – see you soon for more of your magic touch!
